30-day follow up with podiatrist

By | November 10, 2009

I went for my follow up checkup with the podiatrist last week, Wednesday.  It has been 30 days and I was told by the doctor’s assistant if I still have pain on my feet, call up to schedule an appointment with the doctor.  I did just that because my left foot is not getting any better.  The right foot is improving but, of course, with too much walking or standing it will hurt a little, not as much as the left.

The left foot is totally out of whack, in my book.  I have even walk less with the boys.  I’m going every other day and take all three at the same time so I don’t have to walk twice in a day.  The left heel is still painful.  I will be limping after a walk with the boys, can hardly stand on it.  So the right foot compensate a lot of that weight.  The next morning and through out the day, the left foot will hurt most when I get up to walk.  And another thing is I’m not taking the prescribed anti-inflammatory, Naproxen either.  Those meds gives me a very bad feeling in the gut – a burning sensation and the next worse is cannot pangsai = constipation!!!!

So the follow up day the doctor said I need to get x-rays on both foot.  I asked about heel spurs but doc is very adamant it’s plantar fasciitis.  Nonetheless, I was escorted to get the x-rays done which only takes less than 10 minutes and 5 minutes later I was back in the examination room to wait for the doctor.  Everything is so high-tech now that the x-rays are all computerized.  See how ulu I am!!

Anyhoo, the doctor told me I have a very tiny heel spur on my left foot which is not the cause of the problem.  It is his initial, plantar fasciitis is the problem.  He said the way to treat it is cortisone shots, AGAIN!!!  I told him I will never ever get those shots again.  His call was the initial shots are usually a little painful (bite my ass, it wasn’t for me) and the subsequent ones don’t.  Hahahaha, like that helped to console me.  Hell no.  I was very firm with my NO and told him how painful and how long the pain lasted from the previous shots.  His alternate remedy was surgery.  Woohoo!!!  An outpatient surgery that will last about 15 minutes.  He will cut a little incision on the bottom of the left foot where the plantar fasciitis is and lengthen it.  Sounds weird but he said it works for all his patients.  I can still drive since it’s on my left foot but have to stay off the the walks for 5-6 weeks.  That’s the solution to fix the pain on my left foot, and he said usually insurance will pay for the surgery. Hah!

I have decided not to go for the surgery and continue to wear the over priced inserts.  Can’t afford to be on crutches when i have to clean the house daily and scoot the dogs out of the house for showings for 5-6 weeks.  I asked my coworker who had went for the same surgery for her plantar fisciitis on both her feet 3 years go how was the surgery and feel now.  She said the surgery made a world of a difference for her, no more pain but she still wears her inserts just to be safe.  The surgery was worth the pain.  I will think about surgery when things are more settle for me.

Will the hubby be home for thanksgiving? If he will then he should stay a little longer so you can have someone around to help you and you can have your surgery to just get it done with. Can you re appeal for the inserts with the insurance company?I don’t know if you know this but if you afford it (I’m not sure about the company where u get your inserts) for hospital or medical fees if you ask them if they could give you a break if you pay full price you might be surprise at the discount they give you. I heard even up to 50%!

I’m not sure yet if he will be home for Thanksgiving. Ok, I will have to call up the ins company and ask if they can look into the ins coverage.

Better have it done the soonest possible. This kind of stuff no main-main ya.

I really don’t know when to do it coz not even sure if the man is coming back at any time soon. And if he is back it will probably be for the move.

Dawn, nice to hear about your podiatry trip because I am facing the same problem as you are now. My left foot is still killing me slowly, i wear insert accordingly to the instruction…actually more pain. Have to make appt with podiatry soon too . I got my insert two weeks ago. Surgery sounds scary but it might be worth it rather than live with pain….which I am currently am. good for you no cortisone shot, the last time you had it was a horrible experience. Good luck though..

It took me awhile to get used to the inserts too. The right foot is so much better but the left is not getting better. I think I will go with the inserts for the time being till all the showings and moving are done. Then I will consider the surgery.

I would go for the surgery, Dawn. Like Che-Cheh said, jangan main-main ya. Get it fixed and be pain-free. If you were to go for the surgery, do you get the days off work for 5-6 weeks?

I would like to go for the surgery too, but I think i have to wait till I’m done with the showings and moving. Plus, don’t even know if the man is coming for the holidays. Yes, I do have STD for 5 weeks.

so sorry to hear your orthotics doesn’t make your foot better..so far Eliot doesn’t complaint about his foot, maybe his orthotics really prevent his heel spur from acting up again..I heard alot of people hate cortisone shots..My MIL took once and swear never take it again!…maybe you should consider surgery when hubby come back so he can help..Hope you feel better.take care:)

The right foot is much better with the orthotics but not the left. Like the doc said, the left side plantar fisicitis is very bad. Yeah I am thinking of surgery when I’m done with showings and possibly after moving.
