Kerabu Timun(Spicy Cucumber and Dried Prawn Salad

23 August 2007 by Two Crazy Dogs

I made this dish after reading my sister’s cooking/food blog. I think folks who read my blog now knows who my sister is :) Yeah, she is super nice, put up all these simple dishes on her blog to make me cook! It worked, so her hard work paid off.

Below is my version of the Kerabu Timun, and this is hers. Hers look so much better. The cucumber I got from my coworker who brought them in from her garden. They are China hybrid cucumbers, and those cucumber looked really weird. I called it cucumber from the Alien Nation.

Anyways, I put too much chilie padi on mine and after a few bites, looked for something sweet, waited till the fire subsided and went for it again. I used the chilie belachan my sister sent me. That chilie was good. DB took a few forkfulls and sweat was breaking out. Haih….. but the thing is he said it taste good. “What did you put in there? I thought you were going to make it with some stinky stuff?” Hahahaha, I told him I did use the stinky stuff and even put in dried shrimp. He was still wondering why he didn’t smell it when I made it…. COZ I DIDN’T FRY THE STINKY STUFF IN THE PAN, BABE!!

Looks wonderful. Too bad I can’t take chili now. My stomach cannot bear another intake of spicy stuff.

My grandma signature dish = mix sliced cucumber+sliced chili+kicap+sugar…and just eat it like that. I don’t know what it’s call. LOL

Che-Cheh: Thanks for dropping by. Your grandma’s dish sounds good too. I will have to give it a try!

AN: The China hybrid cucumber is about 12″ in length, the skin is kinda pokey, light green and very crisp. The vegetalbe grow in a weird shape. It actually has an S shape to it.

I made fried kangkung the other day (minus the belacan), Forrest didn’t really fancy it cos of the dried shrimp. I don’t know what’s it about me….I just love stinky smelly seafood like dried shrimp and salted fish…hahahhaha

Simmie: I love belacan, dried shrimp and anchovies too, but hubby is like Forrest, can’t stand the smell especially when I’m cooking it.

Hi Dawn, wow! Any woman who can make kerabu like this sure don’t grow on trees! If I am not married, you single, I sure send by Fedex Express my resume and application to date you, and my florist will retire early too, ha ha.
Your kerabu, your sister’s sure looks excitingly delicious.
I bet your mom must have been a gourmet cook to impart such talents on her beautiful daughters.
Psssst, what’s your husband’s weight? Arhaaa ha ha.
You have a nice day, Dawn, UL.

Hello Uncle Lee, Aiyo, I malu when you say that. I am trying out and have never made it. Turned out to be good coz it’s not as stinky as I thought! Anything that hubby can eat with all the stinky stuff I put in, I consider food ok. Yeah, if you send the application to me, make sure it requires signature, just to make sure it reaches! :-) By the way, hubby said his weight went up from all the rice he eats with the chicken and oyster sauce dish I make once a week! Simple dish and my own concoction!

How did she manage to bring in the seeds from China. I thought it is a big No, bringing in plants and stuff from else where ?

May be she is trying to shpae the cucumber, like the bobsai haha….. :)

AN - She bought the seeds from the nursery near her home. The nurseries here have all kinds of vegetable hybrids. Shape the cucumber like a bonsai? I would really like to see that! :-)

Hi Pearly, oh thank you. Hubby so far enjoyed it. Tonight’s batch, he ate more because it was less spicier. I really wish I can cook like my sister. My sister picked up her cooking skills from our mom. As for hubby, I really hope he will be half chinese after eating what I cook on my sister’s blog. Some of what I tried on her blog, he said they were too stinky when I was cooking them. I was thinking of rendang too. Maybe tomorrow!

Dawn…. wow I forget that you are from KL… so your meals won’t be much different that mine~! :-)

Your Ketimun looks delicious…! yummy… is it very spicy?…. It looks like sweet sour and a little bit tasty for me… :-)

Trinity, I was actually from Ipoh, Perak. I suppose Malay and Indonesian food are quite similar. Yes, I made that batch super spicy. It’s not sweet at all coz I didn’t put any sugar in it. You can check out my sister’s blog for the recipe.

    Hi Dawn

Oh! that kerabu looks lovely. Now that gives me an idea … thanks to you and your sister.
I just bought some cucumbers today and I have some belacan. Now, to look for some chillies. :)

You take care now and have fun cooking.

    Hi J.T.
Thanks, I made that kerabu again this evening. Speaking of belacan, I bought a bottle of shrimp paste, cooked it and hubby said he could he smelled it while mowing the yard!
