Mr. Ranger

Mr Ranger is getting very old.  Old in age, yes,  he’s going to be 13 years old in April.  Human age for his weight and size is around 96, that’s what the vet told me.  We think he has some problem inside him, too.  Inside meaning his organs are shutting down.  It’s either his kidneys are failing or he has diabetes.  Also, he is not listening very well either.  We need lots of patience with this geriatric pooch.

The good thing is he is still a chow hound.  He loves to eat so much that he even eats poop left by other dogs and the dogs’ owners have not been picking them up.   Mr Chow Hound has so much energy to walk to his favorite spot for his potty, the will walks fast to the spot where he know he will find some poop to mow on.  So we have not been walking him there but guess what???  This fella just does not want to walk unless we walk to that direction where his poop spot is.  This dog is like a kid.

This morning I walked the boys the usual path and heading towards the poop spot but half way there, I told Ranger turn, go home.  He immediately stop, looked at me, looked over where he wants to go and sat down.  Man, I had to pull him then he will walk but he will stop, looked over that spot and me pulling him again.  So he is one great pretender.  He knows how to pretend; pretend he is aching, limping really bad where I had to actually help him, more like scooting his back to walk home.

We are waiting for an opening with the vet to bring him in.  The vet is fully booked.  I want a blood test done on him if he has kidney problems or diabetes and we go from there.  He is Prednisone for so many years, I’m afraid Cushing disease is very imminent  because of all the signs I’m seeing.  Yes, I have been observing him ever since he has to take Pred for all his life.  The heavy panting and the crazy shedding recently plus drinking lots and lots of water gave me the conclusion he has some kind of problem going on inside him.  If treatment is too expensive, I am sad to say we have to put him down.

Dang….too soon.

To the dogs now.  The two dogs are loving the much cooler weather.  The colder it is out there, there’s less and less panting.  The day temperature so far is around lower 50′s F and evening is down to 40′s F which is really nice for outdoors.  I have been spending a lot of time outside since it is so much cooler out.

Ok, back to the dogs…. Ranger is itching on his very bad hot spot.  I forgot to take a picture of it .  I will when I get home and upload it.  The hot spot started off as a very small spot and was getting worse the beginning of fall which we sent him to the vet.  Vet said it was infected, cleaned the wound and gave us antibiotics for him.  It sure seems like every darn infection on a dog, the vet will prescribe antibiotics.  The antibiotics were administered and done with in 2 weeks.  Ranger also quit itching much but now….for some reason, he suka-suka scratched the spot till it bleeds.  That night when I saw the blood on the carpet, I knew he was scratching it and I had to clean it up.  I used diluted tea tree oil (melaleuca) to clean the wound.  Surprisingly the bleeding stopped very quickly but the hug spot is still the same.  Occasionally it will ooze blood.  Dang, I really have a very bad feeling especially reading about the top 10 cancer related claims from VPI (Veterinary Pet Insurance).   I took a snap shot of it from my email.  However when I clicked on the links on my email it takes me to PetPlace.com.

It really makes me sick to see that Lymphoma is the number 1 on the list and worse was seeing number 5, Eyelid Cancer.  Cooper had that too. Take a look at the picture I took which was taken 5 days before he left us.  Can you see the lump under his eyelid?
DSC03545

I had mentioned the lump on Cooper to Dr M, maybe couple years ago.  It was growing and was actually leaking blood and some times water. It looked lika pus. Dr M said it’s nothing to worry about. Again, it’s an infection from the oil glands around the eyes. He prescribed antibiotics and eye ointment. Those two medications work but it was just temporary.  Oh well, there’s no sense crying over it and same with reading over his blood work (they were very bad).  He is in better place now, seriously.

Ok, now to Chase, he is the replica of Cooper…..he whines for every thing like Cooper was, but Chase’s whines are loud as if someone is slaughtering him.  The worse is when we get ready for our walks.   I guess I should have trained him better when he was younger.  Like the saying goes, you spend and give a lot of time and attention to the first one, when the second and third one comes into the picture, all obedience training goes down the sewer!  Hahaha expecting the young ones to learn from the older ones.  What a joke.  He is actually getting some grays on his snout.  He will 5 on December 28, no signs of slowing down with this fella.   It’s alright with me.  Get me running all the time when I take him for his walks.  This guy here is as happy as a clam.  Tail is forever wagging and jumping around like a little gremlin!

I’m going to take a picture of Ranger’s enlarged so-called hot spot.  I said so-called because I don’t believe it’s a hot spot.  I will send that picture to my friend’s son who is a veterinarian, an ophthalmologist, but I’m sure he will have some idea.

Updated: Here’s there best I can get of the lump.  Cleaned it as much as i can but there are still dried up blood on it.

The day and the other 2 dogs

Comments Off

The day we have to take Cooper to the vet to put him down, Ranger and Chase were super hyper. Ranger especially. He is always laid back, only will move around when we call him. But that day, he was following us after I put Cooper’s collar on. Ranger and Chase were already at the door when we helped Cooper to the door. Cooper kinda stopped for a while at the door and we had to shoo the other two out of the way. The two others’ tail were wagging crazy and told them they cannot come. Told them to say their goodbyes to Cooper now. With that, we left them behind and when looked back as I shut the door, I saw their puppy eyes, tails all down. So darn sad. I have to said that day we all don’t need any fat burners for we were all running on adrenalin.

When we were in the car driving to the vet, we were wondering how the other two were as they acted really extraordinary.  However when we got to the vet parking lot, we totally forgot about the other two and had to carry Cooper out from the car.  He was able to hop in the car which surprised us both but he could not get out.  He was still able to walk inside and even to the room where the nurses prepped for us (the exam table moved to the side and a big blanket laid on the floor).  We directed Cooper to the blanket and asked him to lay down and the nurse went through some paperwork with us asking if we want private (will have his ashes back in an urn) or communal cremation.  We declined his ashes but would like his paw print on a clay.  The then told us they are going to leave us alone with him, taking our time.  When we are ready to have them take him for prep, just call them.  They then took him away to prep the catheter and carried him back to the room.  So heartbreaking to see him being carried that way knowing how active he once was.  Even one of the nurse carrying was crying.

When the nurses put him down on the floor, he walked to DB and I and his tail was wagging.  It was the first time in 2 days he wagged his tail.  It’s as if he is telling us he love us and thank you.  He laid down on the same position he did for the past 5 days.  He was unable to lay on his side, if he did, it was only for a second.  Doc Mitchell came in, exchanged greetings, hugs and asked if we had gone through euthanasia before.  Both DB and I had not gone through it before.  He explained what he is going to do with the three shots (relax him – unconsciousness, respiratory, and cardiac arrest – heart stops).  Doc M talked to Cooper and we had to coax him to lay down on his side which he didn’t want to.  I then told Doc to help him relax.  I had to tell Cooper a few times “Cooper, go to sleep” and Doc M administered the first shot which Cooper laid on his side right away.  Within seconds he was relaxed (muscles twitching) and had this peaceful look on him.  I was relieve to see that he was able to relax and sleep.  Doc M administered the other two between 5 seconds.  The final one we were able to hear Cooper took his last breath.  As heart wrenching it was, I was happy he was not in pain or suffering anymore.  I only had memories of him when we were playing tug-of-war.  Funny how I had those memories during that time.  There was not much muscles twitching after that.  The tail was tucked between his legs when he laid down but when the muscles relaxed it was straight out.  Doc M left after he checked Cooper’s heart stopped and told us to take as long as we want with him.  DB and I spent another 10 minutes with Cooper.  During that time, I smelled him and looked at his ears which already turned yellow as same as his teeth, and the white of his eyes.  His eyes were still opened but the second lid (all water dogs has that 2nd lid so that they can see when they are swimming underwater) was covering them.  Even DB said Cooper look so at peace, no anxious looking but just sleeping like himself.  He did not defaecate or peed since he didn’t eat for so many days and no water at all since the morning.  Basically he left a very clean boy, as always.

When we got home, the other two were wild.  Ranger and Chase sniffed us down as usual but the unusual thing was they went upstairs checked out the rooms, downstairs everywhere and waited at the doors (front and garage) every few minutes.  OMG, that was so hard to take in.  They were looking for Cooper.  That’s when DB and I thought we should have brought them with us.

We had to round up the two in the living room, pet them, talk to them and was with them for a while.  They did the same thing  as before each time I went out and came in to the house.  The next day I had to go for a church thingy, they did the same thing and DB had to round them up.

Today I went to church and told my RCIA coordinator, about Cooper.  She is a dog lover.  She asked if I brought the other two with us to the vet during Cooper’s last time on earth.  I said no and she said we should and was surprised our vet didn’t mention that option to us.  Her son who is a veterinarian lecturing at a university in Michigan, said owners who have more than 1 dog should bring the other living one with them during the euthanasia.  Dogs already can sense sickness and death on the sick dog.  He said the living dog will get a sense of closure being with the sick dog when it dies.  If the living dog is not present during the euthanasia, it will go searching for the sick dog.  Immediately I felt so guilty.  She told me don’t go on a guilt trip, it’s over.  Next time we know what to do.  She said that’s why the other two are going round the house looking for Cooper.

I have to say that the other two dogs are extremely clingy to us now.  They want attention at all times.  Them going around the house looking for Cooper has stopped.  They did go over to where I hung up Cooper’s collar (by the stairs) to sniff it.  I suppose in their minds they know Cooper is no longer with us.  Their eyes will move when I say the name Cooper to them.  Wish i can read their minds.

Dogs definitely are God’s gift, they teach human beings a lot about patience, loyalty, perseverance, humility, friendship and forgiveness.  DB and I were talking about how Cooper was a whiner, a melodramatic dog, but never once he made noise during his last days with us.  He only moved away from me many times when I talked, petted him, as if he does not want me to be sad, but no grunting from him.  This is what I found on the web about animals that are dying:

In some cases, your pet will tell you it’s time. He will start to separate himself from you. If he has spent nearly every night sleeping beside, or in, your bed and he seeks out places that resemble a cave on what seems like a whim, he may be preparing himself for death. Pack animals in particular have been known to separate themselves from the pack in order to prevent the strong from becoming injured while protecting the weak. Both DB and I are very relieve that Cooper, the resident dog, is now at peace, finally able to sleep and having a big happy time chasing squirrels, rabbits, deers and birds in heaven!  Cooper, buddy boy, we are missing you.  We are reminiscing the good old times we shared from when you were a pup, adolescent to adult.

Cooper’s blood work

Comments Off

Cooper’s blood work came back today.  All is good except for one…..that’s the liver test.  One of the tests results for the liver came back in the hundreds instead of the norm 60′s.  He is still not eating.  We even cracked an egg and melted some bacon grease for him, no go.  Usually he will wallop it up in no time.

The vet called said to give him antibiotics now till the cytology results come back tomorrow.  I went to pick the meds up feeling really crappy.  The two receptionists in their cotton scrubs with doggie prints were so cheerful.  I suppose that’s what they are suppose to be….be cheerful to greet the clients!  If only I can wear scrub to work from http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/.  No hassle with what to wear everyday!

While I was at work, DB said Cooper went outside with him, did his business and laid on the grass for a while and drank some water when the came in.  That is good to hear because this morning, he drank nothing.  DB is till waiting for Doc M, our usual vet, to call him, if he is going to.  Doc N called him with the the blood work.  DB wants to hear what Doc M, the doc who always has pristine white lab coat on.  DB and Doc N agreed we cannot do anything for now until the other test comes back.

I hope this is just a virus infection Cooper is fighting, not cancer.

Heart is willing but….

Yes, that’s about Cooper.  He wants to eat but each time he looks and smells the different kinds of foods I offered him, he turns away.  Or he will lick some which makes me so happy but then he turns away.  He was even puking after he tried eating some on Monday and Tuesday evening.

I brought him to the vet yesterday.  I wanted to wait till today, Thursday, to see our usual vet, Dr M, however, he was on vacation.  Dr N, a very young vet saw Cooper.  Told her Cooper does not have the appetite to eat, he wants to eat coz he gets so excited that I’m getting the food ready but when he sees and smells the food, whether it’s canned, few different kinds of dry food, soften dry food, he turns away.  The same when it comes to his walks.  He will get up, go to the door, goes out but so slow.  He will do his business but stops and looks so tired.  That’s when i will bring him home.

I even told the vet he is running a temp which was right (103.8 F), his lymph nodes are swollen and breathing heavy.  The vet and another one of her colleague confirmed his lymph nodes are swollen and what I had mentioned to her which they said is not good.  There might be something in his lungs and the worse scenario is he has cancer of the lymph nodes.  That’s really hard to digest.

The vet said she can draw the fluid from the nodes for a cytology test and blood (blood work) to see if it’s cancer.  She told me to leave him at the clinic for the morning.  At the mean time she gave him some high dosage antacid and also a few tablespoons of prescription I/D food which he took a few bites.

When I picked him up after work, he was the same as before, but darn happy to see me.  Tail wagging 100 mph.  He’s lethagic.  No food for so many days will do that, right?  Poor baby.  :(   The vet told me the cytology results will come back in a couple of days whereas the blood work, in a day.

Last night for dinner, we tried the same food the vet prescribed for him but he didn’t even want it.  Again, he turns away after licking my fingers.  Yes, I have been hand feeding him for a few days now.   Gave mashed potatoes, nope, that didn’t work either.  We boiled some chicken for him which he ate a bit.  I was so happy!!! :)   This morning DB told me he threw up the chicken around 1:30 am.  He wanted to go for his walk when I took the other two out this morning.  He came along, did his business and again, seem too tired to go any farther.  I brought him home, but I can see he wants to go with the other two.  It’s so painful to see him this way.

What we can do now is wait for the results from the vet and go from there.  As of now, we are treating him symptomatically (learned a new word from the vet!).  If the tests comes back negative, then we will go for xray of his abdomen and lungs, however if it is the opposite, we have to put him down.  I’m already tapping into my rent $$.

Cooper, baby boy, please get well.  Prayers are needed for Cooper.  Thank you very much.

Dog on hunger strike

Comments Off

DSC03542
This is Coops, he is on a hunger strike.  This has been going on for a couple of days.  If the man has not called the vet to bring Coops in today, I will have to do it.  Sien!!!  (Sien of the man!!!)

Cooper only ate one full meal yesterday evening, that was because it was egg day.  We crack an egg each for them for their Sunday’s dinner.  He ate that up in a jiff!  This morning, he won’t he touch his food, however, when we mixed his and Chase’s food together, he ate some.  Some is because he picked out Chase’s food.  So, we only gave him Chase’s food which he ate three quarters of it which is pretty darn good.  I usually leave his food for 30 minutes. When the 30 minutes is up and he has not touch any at all, too bad, he has to wait for his next meal.

Something is definitely not right with this boy lately.  He has been walking very slow but still very very eager to go for his walks.  Each time he sees me grabbing the poopy bags, he jumps right up and goes to the door.  He has lost some weight since he has not been eating much.

However, this other buddy of mine, Ranger, is so active and when he saw the bowl of food laying out, he had to come over and laid down, hopefully he will get some. FAT CHANCE!!!

The darker square kibbles is his normal food, the yellowish round ones are Chase’s.

Pet damage lawn

Comments Off

I think my dogs pee acid instead of urine!! LOL!!  Actually their pee is high in nitrogen which makes the green grass turn brown or bald.  In other words their pee burns the grass, that’s why I say they pee acid! :D

The front lawn of our house is very badly damage.  Our landlord came over to repair the damage spots.  There were a lot of areas they needed to reseed those affected spots.  I didn’t get to take pictures of the “before” and “after” coz they came the same day they sent us the email telling us they are coming out now!  Here are the instructions they gave us on how to take care of the newly seeded spots.  I wish they placed stakes and strings around those re-seeded spots, but they didn’t.

Now I’m waiting for DB to roll out the water hose, hook it up to the tap, which he said he will get it out yesterday!  Man!!! I tell you, this guy has no damn blardy motivation at all, or I’m just wired with extra high voltage!

Anyway, the purpose of the water hose is to water down the dog pee 3 times the volume of pee.  This way the “acid” pee will spread out and not sit on one spot.  Nothing beats cement!!!!
