Satellite dish it is for me

Comments Off

DB is a hardcore TV addict.  No joke, he has to watch TV when he is prepping dinner, or when he gets home, the first thing he will do is turn the TV on.  We have a TV in the dining room now and we installed a dish TV a month after we moved in.  I was kinda against it but then I thought since he is paying for the bill, I’d let it go.

Having satellite dish instead of cable has its advantages and disadvantages.  I much prefer cable because when it rains or any bad weather, the cable will not lose signal.  Satellite dishes do, however cable has fewer channels than satellite dish.  The cable company we had frequented usually comes with a package with internet and or phone.  However this time around we just wanted TV channels, no internet and what not.  So DB stuck on with his favorite dish TV provider, Direct TV.   I left it to him to settle this “TV” thing since he is the who will be watching the most.

Direct TV do offer a few direct satellite tv offers.   There are quite a number of packages to pick from.  I had already told him to pick the minimal but that fella still insist on some channels like Fox Sports North (FSN), ESPN, Western and FX and some other channels I can’t even remember.  I cannot remember which package he picked, I think it’s the Choice package, since it was priced very reasonably and the channels he wanted are there.

Since DB is paying for all bills, I don’t really care what he wants to  order for channels but I still want a moderate looking statement every month.  Anyway, he told me since we are only getting two receivers, the bill will drop tremendously compare to four receivers.  I have to agree that the statement is better looking and I do like how Direct TV have their tv pricing fair with other companies with the channels we have and the price we pay plus it includes all the local channels, too.  I’m up for that.

English

Comments Off

I chance upon this this article on Yahoo yesterday morning.

Once I started reading it, it reminds me of DB.  English is his native language.  Yes, his spoken English is, of course, better than mine plus all the slang and some phrases that really get me “urh….”, however, I have to say his spelling sucks to high heaven.  English is my second language or is it third? :)   After going through ESL (English as Second Language) classes and writing classes at the community college, my writing improved, way better when I first got here, although my spoken still sucks.

Anyway, I want to say is this.  DB’s usage of “you’re” and “your” is so apparent, it just irks me to death.  Example, “Your welcome.”  Drives me nuts seeing that on text or emails.

And when he writes “The dogs are board.”  I have to read that sentence again to get the meaning.  It should be “bored” not “board”.  Another one I see very often amongst my coworker is “tasty”.  Some of them write “taste” and DB spell it that way too when I say the chicken was tasty.  Another big one this manager uses is “my bad”.  I think that is slang but it’s not a proper sentence and I’m picking up on it once in a while and I will catch myself once I say it and then correct myself.  I will say, “It’s my fault/mistake.”

Oh since I’m at it, he still says for example, “I doesn’t like the shirt.”  WTH, right?  I have to correct him, “I don’t like the shirt.”  Sometimes I know he is saying it wrong on purpose but in emails and when I read his cover letters, I have to correct his grammar and spelling and like the article said, spell check do not check some words that are not right for the sentence.

Not boasting here but I told him he should be teaching me English, not the other way around.  Yes, no?

What do you do when…..

Comments Off

….you see a depressed person wasting his/her life away doing nothing about it.  Worse still is he/she is not enjoying what God has given to him/her.  It is extremely sad.

Sometimes talking to the depressed person is not easy either.  He/she might not want to talk about the problem that is bugging them.

The doctor is the best medicine for these kind of folks.  The doctor will prescribe the “happy pill” if worse comes to worse for that person.

Been there done that, and I’m glad I’m out of this depressed mode.  I am hoping this person will come out of this shell very very soon.  It is nerve wrecking, I know.

Songs of the 80′s

Comments Off

This is what I do at work when I have no mood….I flip on to YouTube and search for the hit songs back in the 80′s and early 90′s.  I found video on  the compilation of the 80′s music.  They are in 4 parts.

Part one

Part two

On this compilation, the 3rd song, “Relax” I think is Duran Duran is the name of the band, not Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Part three

Part four

So many memories….the best of my growing up years…hanging out with friends jamming to these songs.  I also have them recorded in cassette tapes.  Super ancient, man!  Also, the names of bands: Wham, Spandau Ballet, Queen, Duran Duran, Toto, REO Speedwagon, U2, Simple Minds, Police, Culture Club, and so many more….notice majority of the bands that I remember most are from UK???  I think these bands were the best! :)   My all time favorite back then was Duran Duran and then Tears for Fears

I could still remember the lyrics to most of these songs in the videos.  Scary….goes to show why I didn’t do well in my SPM! :)   Oh and don’t forget MJ back in the 80′s: Beat It, Billy Jean, Thriller…these songs were used in our school performances…I didn’t performed lah, but my schoolmates.  And when breakdance came to life in the 80′s…trying to do some of the dance….surprised I didn’t break any bones.

I LOVE the 80′s! :)   Right now listening to Karma Chameleon – Boy George.

mole on head

…due to itchy fingers?

That mole is on DB’s head.  Yeah, he is going botak, so I told him to crew cut his head.  Anyways, I saw this mole-y thing on Sunday night.  He could not see it, so he asked me to take a picture and so he could send it to his mom.  MIL was a RN, I guess he wanted her opinion.  I told him to go make an appt with his doc but he said will wait for his annual checkup which is soon I think.   He also said he was scratching a spot on his head coz there were dry skin.

Well, I am guessing this mole-y looking thing is from his itchy fingers, however, he said one of his prescription medications have skin rashes as side effects.  I will have to see if he will have it check out.  I can lead the horse to the water but can’t force it to drink.

Skip a rope

Comments Off

Sunday mornings are DB’s time of the day.  He get to listen to his old country songs on the radio.  So happened this morning we were in the kitchen putzing around for our usual coffee.  This song came on.  Listening to it, made me uneasy.  I know DB was listening to it coz he was very quiet.  After the song was over, I said what an awful song to listen to.  He said I wouldn’t know how it is since my siblings and I had not have these environment in our family, our upbringing were a total opposite. He said there were  many times he and his siblings had these bad dreams in their sleep.  It always sadden me when he talks about his family and the environment he was brought up in.

Skip a rope skip a rope listen to the children while they play
Ain’t it kinda funny what kids all say skip a rope

Daddy hates mama mama hates dad
Last night you should’ve heard the fight they had
Gave little sister another bad dream she woke us all up with a terrible scream
Skip a rope skip a rope…

Cheat on your taxes don’t be a fool what was that they said about the golden rule
Never mind the rules just play to win and hate your neighbor for the shade of his skin
Skip a rope skip a rope…

Stub ‘em in the back that’s the name of the game
And mama and daddy are the ones to blame
Skip a rope skip a rope listen to the children while they play
It’s not really funny what children say skip a rope
Skip a rope skip a rope

What if…

Comments Off

This “what if” keeps popping up in my head.

What if DB goes to Texas and gets a job?

What if he goes to Texas, when I will join him in Texas?

What if I quit my job?  But the job pays good for now tho it’s a dead end job, however, the company provides good health benefits, insurance?

What if I don’t quit my job, I stay back with the boys….man, that will be a lot of work for me!

………..Will cross the bridge when it gets here.  I’m a worrier, I think a lot.  Can’t help it.

Seriously thinking of Skype

Comments Off

I was chatting with Pearly this morning on Yahoo.  No, I didn’t re-install Yahoo Messenger in my pc at work.  I used the regular chat box on Yahoo.  Works good but the drawback is I cannot retrieve the archives.  Oh well, can’t have the best of both worlds, can I?

Anyway, we chatted about calling overseas and how expensive to buy minutes on the calling cards.  She mentioned instaling Skype on my PC.  I will have to talk my sis to install it on her PC and we can chat for free.  Each time my sis and I chat on the phone, it’s endless.  And calling land lines and cellphones are cheaper too.  I’m sure it will be cheaper than using my calling card.  Well, I did checked Skype, a call to a cellphone number to Malaysia is $0.067 per minute.  At least I can call my parents frequently instead of having them to call me.

Pay to do your business

Comments Off

When I was in KL, my friend Deb took me to Suria KLCC.  It was the first time I was there and I was so glad that I got to go see what the Petronas Towers look like.

We walked almost every floor and till I had to pee. So happened we were on the second floor, the floor where all the designer stores are located.  As I was walking I saw the sign for bathrooms and told Deb I’m going to the bathroom.  She told me not to go to the bathrooms on the second floor.  Why I wondered??

The most expensive bathroom fee!

There.  Because it’s a Premier Paid Toilet.  Whoever needs to go do their business and so happen you are on this floor, you have to pay RM2.00, and exact change, too.  I should have paid the RM2.00 and take a look what so special are their bathrooms that one has to pay that much pee or poop.  Does it not smell like the other non paying bathrooms?  I wonder if they are spotless and dry?  Must be some fancy schmancy toilets, gold trimmings with bidets??  :)   Wonder how many people has patronize this Premier Paid Toilet?  I suppose whoever thought of this idea thinks that if one can afford to shop on this floor, he/she can afford to pay the RM2.00 for a pee or dump.  Can’t be curious anymore coz maybe the next year or two when I’m in KL, it’s not required to pay anymore.

Same sex marriages

Comments Off

I was on the phone with a friend this evening and we had a conversation in regards to same sex marriage how she supports it by legalizing it, but I am the opposite.  I don’t care if you gay/lesbian but I do not believe in same sex marriage.  Yes, some companies do not include their significant other/partner in the insurance coverages.  She told me about her instructor who is gay and her partner was involved in an accident and almost in a vegetable state.  She was sent to a nursing home by the girl’s parents after she came out from her coma, where I suppose in a nursing home they do not have to purchase incontinence supplies.  Because there was no insurance coverage provided for the instructor’s girlfriend, this poor girl had to stay in the cheapest nursing home and now that she is living with the instructor who is caring for her occupational and physical therapies, she is able to walk and move her arms.

I still think that companies nationally should include the employees’ partners to the benefits package, but do not pass the damn law to legalize the marriage – so that they can “have” kids which I have read in the news that many gay couples are doing now.  But isn’t it weird, as a child to be brought up with a pair of parents of the same sex?  My coworker and I had this conversation before since our company has this employee resource group for the gay/lesbian and trans-gender, we two totally disagree with congress passing the law on same sex marriage.  I know some states has this law passed, California as one of them, and I think Maryland, too.  And if the Democrats wins the Prez election, we will definitely won’t be seeing this same sex marriage thingy.  Anyways, my thoughts do not worth a cent…..

Halloween kids’ costumes

Comments Off

I saw this article on MSN yesterday which really shocked me when I saw those costumes.
These costumes are totally making little girls vurnerable to pedophiles lurking out there.   I suppose many mothers are dressing up their girls of 8 and above or younger than 8, and sending them  for contest, modelling and acting.  Dressing them up and loading them with makeup at that age is asking for trouble, in my opinion.  Won’t these girls grow up needing more attention and be more materialistic?

I wonder how much parents will spend on Halloween costumes every year excluding what they need to buy for the kids school clothes.  In the article, it says parents will spend around $2 billion for costumes exceeding the amount in 2003.  I bet you many young girls are looking for the Hannah Montana look for this Halloween.

I can’t fathom why parents will allow their kids to dress up like those on the article.  They are utterly not suitable for children.  There are too seductive and won’t the kids grow up with this stigma in them that they have to worry about body image, how pretty they look and how might create problems for the parents when they kids are older?

Well, that’s my thoughts…..

Charles Schultz Philosophy

Comments Off

Charles Schultz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you’ll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Acheivements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
 Easier?

The lesson:  The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Urine Test

Comments Off

SD sent this to me couple weeks ago.  I know for a fact that those who I know and are working, and pay their taxes agrees to this below message.

Like a lot of folks in this state, I have a job. I work, they pay me.
I pay my taxes and the government distributes my taxes as it sees fit.
In order to get that paycheck, I am required to pass a random urine test
with which I have no problem.

What I do have a problem with is the distribution of my taxes to people
who don’t have to pass a urine test. Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine
test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them??

Please understand, I have no problem with helping people get back on
their feet. I do on the other hand have a problem with helping someone
sitting on their ass, doing drugs, while I work… Can you imagine how much money the state would save if people had to pass a urine test to get a public
assistance check ?????

I totally do not agree with the state’s thinking of welfare.  Minnesota has the most generous welfare program in the country.   If folks still have a pair of good limbs, get their lazy butts out and look for a job.  I rather see my taxes go to the National Guards or the Reserves.
