I’m frigging sore!!!

Comments Off

OK, I’m really out of shape…big time!!

I joined membership at LA Fitness together with few of my friends, C, C and T.  Our aim is to attend Zumba classes.  We went last Sunday (1/1) but the instructor didn’t show up.  Instead, we went for a spinning class which turned out not too bad.  Really work the thighs good.  No jelly legs, so that’s good.

So on Tuesday (1/3) I went to a Zumba class at 7 pm at another LAF location.  I wasn’t impressed with the instructor at all.  The class was packed , barely enough room to move around.  There were about 72 heads in the class and the instructor’s voice was no loud enough.  In fact her voice was shrieky!!!  Being a total rookie, I followed the ladies in front of me, the music does not have a good kick.  It was ok, nothing to shout about.  I sweated but not much compared to the spinning class.

I went to another Zumba class that starts at 11 am on Saturday but I was late, my fault coz I had a meeting at church.  I got to the class at  11:30 am and again that class was pack like sardines.  There were so many people, the mirrors were all fogged up and it felt as if I walked into a sauna room!  Serious, it was that steamy.  A man stood outside the door said, “Hot bodies.”  My guess is there are two meanings to what he said. :)

I gave up after 5 minutes coz it was just no fun with not much room to move around.  So I ended up in the spinning class for 35 minutes.  That was darn good that I didn’t want it to end.

Sunday was the day my 3 other friends joined me for Zumba with this particular instructor B.  I have to say she is good, the music she puts out are good and definitely get me moving.  This time round the class has about 30 plus heads, plenty of room to move around.  We didn’t have to stand at the back and were able to see the instructor clearly and her voice carries which was very good.  We ladies plus 2 gentlemen sweated like pigs.  All of our shirts were soaking.

After the class we did the stationary bike for about 20 minutes.  I think I over did it with one hour of Zumba which really worked every damn muscles and the biking and of course, I’m the kind who like to go for the toughest….I increased the resistance every 5 minutes.

I’m now so damn frigging sore from shoulders to my calves.  I never felt so sored since last year after the half marathon I ran.  I am skipping this evening’s class.  My muscles need to recuperate!  Sign of…..age is catching up! :)

Happy 2012

Wow, here we are in a brand spanking new year. Let bygones be bygones and welcome the new year positively. Yeah, that’s my new thinking in life….be positive, not all crapiness are bad after all, except for my bed. I want a latex mattress, a mattress that conforms to my body, posture with no aching joints after a night sleep.

And on the 1st day of New Year, I started on some fitness thing with my friends, C and T.  I hope we will give each other encouragements and push ourselves to better health.  My main focus is being fit, not losing weight.  Tone body will be nice, too! :)

Yeah we started the year with an hour of spinning….we spun our legs till they actually hurt and wobbly.  I making this fitness thingy work and not a few times a year deal.  I don’t make resolutions but just make adjustments to my current lifestyle.  Whatever blows my skirt!

Hope you, peeps, had a good New Year celebration.  May the new year brings in much joy, wisdom and humanity to all!  Peace be with you all!

Slacking in this blog

Comments Off

I’m back home for a week now and I’m still not in the mood to blog.  The travel bug is still in me, and jet lag is not exactly over yet. I’m still thinking of Bali!!!

P1110451

There are a lot of the above kind of statues which I gather are some deities for protection, not sure and I didn’t ask.

I didn’t take many pictures with the camera I brought with me to Bali. Why?? Coz smart me forgot to bring the battery charger along. The second morning when we were getting ready to ronda the town, the baterries died on me. Good thing my sister brought along a spare camera with her. Sis, “lei hei tak geh”.

Oh, after arriving in Bali, my BM came out very naturally. I thought it would take me a while to speak in Bahasa Melayu!! Just seeing the signs in Bali were enough to kick the memory cells into full gear.

P1110478

Of course some words like this Oleh-Oleh I didn’t know what it was. I thought it meant furniture. Turns out it’s a souvenier shop, a shop to ketuk tourist kau kau, yet we bought quite a bit there.  This picture was taken on the free and easy day (5th day out of 6).

Since coming back to MN, my camera is still sitting in my hand carry.  Yes, I still have my 2 big luggage and hand carry laying on the floor with clothes that need to be washed still crying out for me to move them.  I’m just so out of it and going back to work 3 days after I got back was tough.  Will download the pictures from my camera to Flickr this weekend.

My first day back to work was Monday, Dec 19 and guess what??????  My vacation to Bali, Singapore, Ipoh, Singapore was so fabulous I forgot what my network password to my PC.  Even the passwords to the security questions were blur to me.  No choice had to call Help Desk since I tried more than 3 times to answer the security questions and failed majorly.

Needless to say, my write up on Bali is not going to happen soon, or probably might not even resurrect at all based on my lack of motivation! :)   There are some really good pictures my sister and I took that I want to put up here  but then they are already in FB.  There is one picture I took that so reminded me of  Great Ocean Road.  It’s not exactly the same but the fact that the jagged edge that faces the Indian Ocean and the sea eroded cliffs reminds me a lot of it.

The dogs at home are damn thrilled to see me home. Sticking to me like leeches especially Chase. Ranger’s mobility is not good, so he does not climb upstairs anymore. He will move to the living room or dining room wherever DB is. Poor Ranger….we started him back on prednisone again because of the mold outside.  There is not a flake of snow on the ground.  The weather is really freaky….we are having temperatures in the 30′s Fahrenheit.  Some nights the temps stayed above freezing.  This Christmas will be a very brown Christmas.  Christmas hymnes are playing the background as I’m typing this.  No big celebration just the 2 of us roasting a whole chicken with mash taters, sweet potatoes (ladened with butter and brown sugar) and green bean casserole.  I don’t fancy ham, so chicken it is for me.

Again, till my next post….HAVE A BLESSED CHRISTMAS, peeps.

A reminder for myself…

Comments Off

I found this after reading the news about the Duggars expecting their 20th kid!  So I was being a busy-body continued to read about the comments others wrote on this dangerous pregnancy the mother Duggar is going through.  One of the commentersput the below list that she copiedout from the Duggars’ website.    My opinion is it is a list I myself should be mindful of.

  1. Always use soft words, even when you don’t feel well.
  2. Always display kind actions and joyful attitudes, even if you have been mistreated. Have the right response by quickly forgiving others in your heart even before they ask.
  3. Always be enthusiastic and look for opportunities to praise others’ character.
  4. Always deflect praise and be grateful to God and others for the ways they have benefited your life.
  5. Always use manners and be respectful of others and their belongings.
  6. Always do what is right, even when others may not, or when no one is looking.
  7. Thank God for how He made you, for what He has given you and everything He allows you to go through. (Romans 8:28)
  8. Don’t mock or put others down. Develop compassion and pray for others.
  9. Never argue, complain, or blame. Quickly admit when you have done wrong and ask for forgiveness (even if you were only 10% at fault). Don’t wait till you’re caught. Be sure your sins will find you out. He who covers his sin will not prosper, but he that confesses and forsakes it shall find mercy.
  10. Have a tough accountability/prayer partner to daily share your heart with and to keep you in line (your parents, spouse). The power of sin is in secrecy.
  11. Be attentive and look for ways to serve others with sincere motives and no thought of self-gain.
  12. Think pure thoughts (Philippians 4:8, Romans 13:14).
  13. Always give a good report of others. Don’t gossip! Never tale-bear unless physical harm will come to someone. (Use Matthew 18.)
  14. Never raise a hand to hit.
  15. Never raise a foot to kick.
  16. Never raise an object to throw.
  17. Never raise a voice to yell.
  18. Never raise an eye to scowl.
  19. Use one toy/activity at a time. Share!
  20. Do your best to keep your surroundings neat, clean and organized.
  21. Never let the sun go down on your wrath.
(Don’t go to bed angry or guilty)
  22. Amendment J.O.Y. -
-Put Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last.

What’s up?

Comments Off

That’s right, what’s up, peeps?  There is nothing new on my end, for sure.  It’s SSDD – same shit, different day.  All I know is it’s already November and daylight savings ended last Sunday.  However, I am feeling the winter blues already.  It’s absolutely crazy.

I have going to bed around 9-ish every night and up at 4:15 am, yet I’m still tired, so tired that I actually nods off at my desk with eyes opened.  Looks like i have to get back to some serious exercise to boost my energy levels.  Moreover, I don’t see the sun much maybe that’s why the winter blues.  I have to start using the SAD light, you can click on the link to find out more.  I bought it last year and used it every day (15 mins max).  I didn’t know about till I started talking to my coworker, she told me to get the SAD therapy light.  It works if I used it religiously and for 1 hour.  However, I don’t use it for 30 minutes or the recommended 1 hour.   Now that I know my problem, I better take care of it.

I have been doing a lot of window shopping for my trip which is about 3 weeks left.  It’s a scary thought coz I have not shop much…well, take that back.  I did shop for my sister’s boys and some of her stuff, but the biggest headache is what to get for the older folks, i.e. my mom and our family friend (my mom’s age).  I don’t want to get them any knick knacks or blouses.   I thought of getting them chocolates, cookies, handbags (maybe), and then I’m left blank.  Maybe get them a huge bottle of fish oil (1500 mg/capsule) since it’s so cheap here.  I haven’t even clean out my luggage from the previous trip, and when was that???  July 2009!  I have some bits and pieces of papers, flyers, books and no idea what else are in there.

This weekend I really have to buckle up to finish up what’s left I need to get – non parishable stuff.  The parishable stuff are honey crisp and another newer breed apples for my sis, dried cranberries, munchies and not sure what else.  I did write down what I needed to buy but I misplaced the list.  This is call procrastinating!

Ok, next up is about the dogs!  Woof, woof!

Camping adventure at William O’Brien State Park

Comments Off

My camping adventure started on Friday, October 14.  DB got ready all the camping gear for me when I’m at work.  When I got home, he loaded them up in the car for me.  I brought 2 single oversize sleeping bags, tent, stuff for setting up the tent, 2 coolers, rugs, charcaol, lighter fluid, towels, change of clothes, pots and pans, some food, water and i cannot remember anymore!

Drove to my friend’s place, unloaded my car into hers.  Seriously, the next time, we are taking two cars.   We stopped to get some sandwiches at the Vietnamese restaurant and we started our journey.  It takes about an hour from St. Paul to Stillwater.

This is our camp site at William O’Brien State Park in Stillwater.  Picture taken the day we left:
IMG_4274

We arrived at the park grounds and registered at the park office.  We got our permit, paid for it, bought a bundle of fire wood and got to our camp site around 7-ish. Its was pitch black. First thing we did was set up the tent and our sleeping bags. Two rookies working in the dark with just flash lights. Should have just turn on the car head lights and we would have done a quicker job. Since it was our first time, we weren’t that equipped. We didn’t bring or buy any good fire wood. We bought one small pack from the park office. The wood were cheap fly wood that are good for starting a fire.

Our pathetic fire we started with the cheap wood.
IMG_4209

We stayed up for a while in front of the fire, ate the sandwiches we bought on our way in, set up the propane stove to boil water for our Milo and crawled into bed. Yes, we practically crawled in since the tent is only for 2 persons. It was a damn cold night with the wind blowing at a good speed!! The worse thing was we didn’t put the top of the tent (rain cover) on, so we had a good draft coming in. I seriously didn’t know coz the last i went camping, it was not put on!

And this is what it looks like without the cover. We had dew inside the tent!!!
IMG_4212

And basically this is what it all looks like the next morning since we could not see a thing without much light.
IMG_4213
IMG_4215

After we had our breakfast of muffins, tea and Milo, we went out shopping at Walmart for a proper propone stove, loads of water, munchies, and grapes. We then stopped over at Menards hoping to buy firewood but they didn’t have any. We then drove to Cub Foods which was across the street for good firewood. Yes, good ones like oak will burn much longer. The bundle of wood were mixture of oak and birch. We bought 4 bundles. Next we saw a sign for rummage sale at the high school. Crazy us we went in and spent about 2+ hours.

Our loot!

our loot
THere are 2 single sleeping bags, a blanket, bags, sweat shirts, pants, books, and soft toys (for my friend’s school stuff)

On our way back, I had to stop at Starbucks for coffee….need my coffee for the day. Once we got back to camp, my friend started setting up the new stove and cook some comfort food of rice and stir fry.

IMG_4222
IMG_4223

While she was cooking, I re-do our sleeping quaters.  I put the 2 sleeping bags and the rugs I brought under our current sleeping bags so it’s not so hard on our bones!  Next, I prepped the fire pit so we could start the fire later in the evening, however, we rookies didn’t bring a lighter or proper matches to start the fire or stove.

Get this, this was how we lit the stove: pulled out a lousy floppy match (those matches you get from hotels or bars), lit up the cigarette lighter, lit up the match and the other person has to turn on the knob on the stove so the person holding on to the lit up match could light up the stove!!! OMG!!! We were so pathetic. We had a good laugh at ourselves though.

So we lit up the stove but my friend accidentally lost the fire on one side of the stove, not once, but several times. We rolled up some newspaper lit it up and started the other side and my friend ran over to the fire pit and dump the lighted newspaper.  Hence the fire going in the pit:

IMG_4225

The munchies we bought at Walmart:
IMG_4227

After we stuffed ourselves with rice and stir fry veggies with sotong balls (heaven!) we had to go for a walk along the river to walk off the rice! :)

IMG_4227

IMG_4231

IMG_4239

Too bad we came at the end of fall, most of the trees are botak! There were hardly any colors to see.

After the walk, we started our fire and feeding our stomachs again with the munchies, grapes, tom yum noodles and more noodles.

Since none of us had a DSLR, we tried our best to get a good picture of the fire, but these are what we were able to come up with….which spells P A T H E T I C.
IMG_4241
IMG_4267

And it rained on us that night.  We had to scrambled to put the top on, again, in the dark with flash lights!  Shortly after we had our feast of “siew yeh”, we got ready for bed and

Oh and I forgot, there’s free wifi at the park! My friend was able to watch her Korean dramas. Crazy indeed. We are not exactly in the wilderness.

The next morning, we woke up and made our breakfast of hash browns, eggs and tom yum noodles and down it with tea, coffee and Milo! We were pigs.  Remember seeing the two bikes hooked up to my friend’s car?  We wanted to go biking after our dinner last night but I opted to walk, plus the trail were all gravel.  We thought on Sunday morning after we woke up, we could go for a bike ride.  Yeah right, I woke up at 8:30, and my friend at 9.  By the time we had our breakfast and cleaned up, it was time to pack up even though check out time is 4 p.m.  I wanted to get home around 2 to get ready for work the next day.

We finally left the camp site and out of the park at 11:20 a.m.  Got back to my friend’s place and unloaded her car and loaded up mine.  We were getting ready to go to IKEA to get a desk for herself around 1:30-ish, she accidentally locked her house and car keys in her apartment, plus she has no spare keys.  My handbag and her cellphone are sitting in her car.  I have my cellphone so we called and left a text message for her landlord.  Her landlord called at 1:36 and said he will come by within the hour.

To kill time, we went for coffee around the block.  Came back, we BS a little, took pictures, BS more and I was getting grumpy coz i was very tired – eyes closing and yawning till my jaw was about to lock.  I looked at the time which was 2:46 and told my friend I’m going home without my bag.   She said she will drop my bag off when the landlord shows up and after her shower.

Good thing I left coz her landlord texted my phone saying he is running 20 minutes late and the time he texted was 3:20 and I was already home in the garage unloading my stuff.  I even went out to toss the frisbee for Chase for about 20 minutes, no call from my friend.  When i was half way on my walk with Ranger, at 4:15, my friend call saying she just got into her apartment!!!  Good call on my own.

All in all, it was a good adventure.  We weren’t that prepared but still a good experience.  All my other times of camping were well equiped but i never lifted a finger to do anything.  Hence, the rookieness I’m calling myself.

Fall round up

Comments Off

Summer flew by which was no big deal for me since I don’t spend any time outside per se.  I was looking forward to fall and now it’s here.  Love fall for the cooler weather and of course, the changing of the colors on the trees.

As usual my walks with Ranger are longer, too.  This old guy loves his walks although he comes home with a slight limp if he walks very fast.  He, too, is slowing down when he is eating but will forever be a chow hound.  He really knows how to hound you for food which I am sure part of it is due to the medication he is taking that increases the appetite.

Ranger had a yeast infection on his ear two weeks ago.  Took him and Chase in to the Vet.  Ranger was checked out for his weight and the fatty lumps growing around his stomach and hips.  The vet said those lumps are alright as long as they are not hindering Ranger’s mobility.  The vet had to flush out both his ears, gave him an antibiotic jab, treat his major gigantic hotspot below his ear and gave him a thorough check.

Chase went in for his annual jabs and heartworm check.  This dog weighs in 98 pounds.  The vet says he is one very fine specimen.  He has hardly any fat on him, he is just one big guy.  All the running and jumping during his frisbee sessions is making him slimmer but bigger muscles.  I think that’s why he is so much heavier.  His ribs are showing a little and has a waist, so I’m not worried about his weight.  We even increased his food intake per meal.

The dry weather is playing some crazy games on my skin these past month.  I’m now adding essential oil (camellia seed oil) for extra hydration to my skincare routine.  I starting adding this step a week ago.  As far as I can tell, it’s helping.  After doing some research on the oil, the said oil also helps with uneven skin tone.  Again, I should have taken a “before” picture, but I didn’t, forgot about the blogging material!  Anyways, I am going to get additional different essential oils, i.e. Rosehip (rich in omega, helps rejuvenate aged and sun-damaged skin, and penetrates the skin quickly), apricot kernel and Jojoba to add to the Camellia.  It’s way cheaper to DIY than to spend $80+ plus (or some are around $50) for a bottle.  The raw ingredients I am going to get will cost me $30, if more.  This is just an experiment which I’m giving myself 2 months to see the results since I have super bad hyper pigmentation on my cheeks.  Obviously I cannot put too much on the face…I don’t want to look like an oil bucket!  If it does not work, meaning no changes to the discoloration at all on the dark spts, zits galore and increase of oil seeds, I can still use the oils as body oil since I am already using body oil, I’m not wasting them.

Remember I went for a waitressing job interviewed few weeks ago? There is no news from the owner and I didn’t even bother to call him.  He said he would call me whether it’s yay or nay, but not a phone call from him.  I am leaving it as it.  I have second thoughts of getting a second job coz our tax returns came back for 2010 and it’s not good.  We have to pay federal and state, a lot.  I can’t believe we had to pay back since the man only worked a few months.  But then I thought about what I changed on my deductions so I could get more on every paycheck plus the extra income from this blog!!!!!  Shit lah!!!!  The man needs to get a job pronto.

Alright, I better end this post.  I’m rambling on too much.  Till the next couple of weeks…..

Fall-ish weather, misc.

Comments Off

Finally, the temperature is not hovering around the 80′s anymore.  The air conditioning is taking a break, although it had a couple days of rest last week.  The rest of the week’s temperature will hit upper 60′s.  That’s just perfect walking weather.  No rain in sight.

Funny how the two dogs has more energy now that the weather is cooling off in the evening when I take them for their walks.  Ranger walks fast, so fast that I’m actually lagging behind him!  Chase’s frisbee fetching sessions are longer instead of 10 minutes where he will pretty much shows me the body language he is dying from the heat.  Now he keeps wanting to fetch that seems like forever to me.

Yes, I still misses Cooper every time we are outside on our walks and frisbee time.  My tug-of-war and obedience champion! :)   It will be 4 weeks this coming Friday that he left us.  Time is just flying by and we are already towards the end of 3rd quarter.  Looking forward to my trip back to Spore/M’sia end of November/December, but not the shopping before I leave!  If my sister reads this she will give me a earful. Hehehehe.

I went for a part time waitressing job interview last weekend.  It’s a Chinese restaurant out in Edina, owned by a Ipoh guy.  It’s about 40 minutes drive, 27 miles one way.  Will hear from the owner this week if he will hire me.  Although getting a part time job is good for the pocket money, however, with the sky rocketing price of gas, I am not too sure now.  Just thinking of the drive kinda puts me off, but who knows, I  might not get the job since I am not the only one they are interviewing.   But in order to go on vacation at the end of November, I need extra cash…..that leaves me thinking if I should apply for a stocker position at one of these places: Home Depot, Menards, Fleet Farm – they are closer to home especially winter is just around the corner!

Bible study starts this Thursday.  So the novelty of working part time is slowly drifting out of my system, may as well hope I DON’T pass the waitressing interview!  I really am looking forward to bible study.  It’s not money making but it gets me to read the bible! ;)   Need the motivation to jump start the engines.  Will have to sleep on the idea of working PT.

And I’m surprise I’m able to rid of FB games, well, take that back, I did responded to some friends requests and I sent out some requests but I got tired of it.  I told DB it is a good thing my PC is taking its sweet blardy time to process each click.  It’s because of that slowness with my PC that made me kick those darn games out.  Even going into FB checking friends’ stats takes time for the PC to “churn”.  Major sian.  The good thing is I’m working on my sewing albeit slow.

Last is….. I really want to run a 10K or half marathon.  Team Ortho has a Monster Dash run in October.  I know I can register for 5K, but 5K don’t seem to motivate me.  Will have to see how the wallet leaves me with this month to register for one of the longer runs.  10K is a challege, however,  half marathon (13 miles) is even better, it motivates and drives me harder to “get her done” under 2 plus hours.  That’s my goal.

K, that’s all for now till I feel like update again!  Ta ta for now….

The Franciscan retreat

Comments Off

DSC03521

Went to the above place for a spiritual retreat during the weekend.  It’s all scripture base and it was very beautiful.  This place sits on a 60-acre land.  Very peaceful place for meditation and reflection.  It is run by the Franciscans.

DSC03515

Can’t say much about the retreat but just wanted to put up some pictures, although there was no time for that too.  I guess I’m taking them for blogging material!  So here are only few I got that I like.  The one I really like the most is the chapel but didn’t get the opportunity to capture one.

DSC03508

There are rooms for all retreatants but guess what was the first thing that came to my mine???

“What??  No air-conditioning??  It’s almost 90 degrees out and humid!”"

Yeah, I’m really that spoilt!!  However, I hardly spent much time in the room.  Most of the time was spent in the main room where the group met.  Although the main room has air, but it was not on the entire time since the unit is fairly loud when the air kicks in.  I have to admit, the 3 days I was there with hardly any contact with air-conditioning, my skin looks plummer!!!   And yet when I got home, I walked right into an air-conditioning house!

DSC03520

The entire weekend immersing myself with scriptures, prayers and time for reflections was a very good experience.  I thoroughly had a good time and met a lot of people of diverse background.  Would definitely go back again.  Go back as “si-ku” (nun)! :D

Now, only if I can continue doing some of the stuff I did during the weekend while I’m home, would be great.  FB games are totally calling me but I’m so tempted to remove those games completely!!!!  Will see how strong my will is. :)

King Tut exhibition at the Science Museum

Comments Off

I meant to write about my trip to the Science Museum but completely spaced it out.

During the Fourth of July holidays, i went to the Minnesota Science Museum for King Tut Exhibition.

The Science Museum was not pack since I went on a weekday, a Tuesday, July 5.  The wait to get my tickets was speedy.  it was my first time to the museum.  For some reason, I find the place too modern!  I must be a very archaic person!!!!

DSC03466

I went for the whole package: Omnitheater and exhibition with audio player.  My timing was perfect.  By the time I got to the ticket booth for King Tut’s tickets the guy told me the show is starting in5 minutes.  The show, Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs is about the ancient Eygpt and how scientists are preserving them, etc.  The show lasted about 30 minutes.

DSC03489
DSC03490

After the show, I went “touring” the place inside out.  Below are views surrounding the museum.

The entrance to all the exhibits: fossils, insects, tug boats, geology, and so many more I cannot even remember now!!!  My bad for not writing this down after I came home!  :(

DSC03482

The entrance to King Tut’s exhibits.  You can see the line was empty.  So I thought there are no one waiting and I would be the only soul going in!!!  Fat chance, there were so many people are already inside, just that they only allow visitors to go in at certain times.  I bought the fare for audio tour, so I picked up the gadget which looks like a cordless phone but with a cord to hang round your neck.  The audio was narrated by Harrison Ford and more detail narration about a certain exhibits (about a dozen of them) which  narrated by Dr. Zahi Hawass.  No pictures, food, drinks and photography are allowed.  Such a bummer.  What you see on the pictures above are from the pamphlet given to me at the ticket booth.  And majority of the relics are replicas.  However, the treasure found in King Tut’s tomb are real.  Like his chair (on the picture I took from the flyer above), bed, like the fan thingy which I have no idea what the exact name is.

The exhibit starts from the history of the Old Kingdom – maps of the kingdoms, the first to the last pharaohs from the Old, Middle and new Kingdoms.  Artifacts are replicas made from different stones during those times.   The exhibit also brings you to the history of the Royal Family, the 1st female pharaoh (in the Old Kingdom), their feline pets, jewelry, servants, death, mummification, history on King Tut, and finally the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and treasure.  His tomb was at the Valley of the Kings and was intact for 3 thousand years.  Many robbers robbed other tombs except King Tut’s.

There was an actual humongous statue of King Tut on exhibit.  When i stood in front of it, it feels like I was really in Eygpt looking at it.  The color on the statue was fading and some parts I could barely see the color, plus some parts like the feet were chipped off.  The death and mummification process are so interesting.  It tells about the chief embalmer who wears a jackal mask that represents Anubis, who is the God of mummification.  Anubis is sure an eerie looking thing.  The 4 canopic jars where the organs are kept i cannot remember if they are the real deal or replicas.  The four jars are for the liver, lungs, intestines and stomach.  The brain is pulled out through the nose and the only organ left  intact is the heart which is the organ for intelligence and needed for afterlife.  The process of mummification was super interesting.

The very last of the exhibit was the exact replica of King Tut’s mummy.  You can see the YouTube vid on how they did the replica.  I am still fascinated with the Eygptian history and mummification.  The museum actually had an experiment mummification.  They used a chicken as an experiment.  If you are curious like me, click here to see the process.

It was well worth the price of the ticket.  I spent about 4 hours in total at the museum.

Paying off student loan

Comments Off

Back in 2001 I enrolled at University of Phoenix Online for a BS in Business Management. UOP Online has a wide range of accredited online degrees. Initially I was not sure if the company would reimburse the tuition for online degrees. After lots of phone calls and emails with our company’s tuition reimbursement administrator, it was clear for me to enroll. The fees are higher for online courses and it is also a accelerated program. I had to get student loans for the courses and though I didn’t finish the program, I completed only 1.5 years, I have to pay off the loan and finally two weeks ago, the bank sent me a note saying my obligation to pay the loan is a done deal. What a relieve.  JR, a friend from church, said I should try checking out UOP online for other accredited online degrees to continue with my education.  Have a degree will take you a long way.

First half marathon

Comments Off

A recap……darn long post for my own record! :D

My friend asked me if I would like to join her for a half marathon.  I was very skeptical since the last I run as a hobby was in 2006.  Even after she signed me up I was kinda worried if I can actually make it or be the “loser”.

My friend picked up the runner’s packet for me on Friday. The packet consisted of a shirt, cap, bib, and tracker clip. The tracker is to track the runner’s time. We have to slip the tracker in between the shoe lace.

The day came which was Sunday, June 5.  I woke up my normal time (4:15), walked the dogs and then went to her place.  The race starts at 7a m. Half way to her place I remembered I forgot my knee braces.  I just hope I be fine without it.  We wanted to the the light rail train but was told there won’t be a train till noon from a fellow runner (we were wearing the same shirt, cap and he has the bib on).  We drove to the The Depot in Minneapolis, found a parking spot 2 blocks away.  We ran and got there about 8 minutes before race starts.  Dropped off our stuff, got in line and managed to take some pics.

At the start of the race
Start of the race 7 am

It was my first and surprised I wasn’t nervous. My friend told me if I went ahead of her, it’s ok, she will catch up or meet at the finishing line.  I eventually did pass her.  She was ahead of me when we started but once I got my momentum I was going.  The running route was pleasant with a cool temperature of 60′s F and a great way to see the city. I was running all the way till mile 2 I didn’t see my friend and I stopped hoping to see her.  But after a couple of minutes, I went on.

Honestly, I really enjoyed myself.  I love the runners, no matter how slow, fast you are running or even walking, when we pass each other, we give each other encouragements.  The volunteers from Team Ortho or even other organizers (there were different marathons going on that day) and the Minneapolis Marathon were just awesome.  The water/Gatorade stations were a welcome sight.  They never tasted so good!!  I have to admit I walked a bit when we were on bridges coz the surfaces are concrete and I could feel a difference on my knees and feet.  Even on some roads (the older part of Minneapolis) are cobblestones.  Damn, I was definitely doing sprint walking but when I looked at my cellphone (I was carrying it with me for time) it was 40 minutes or maybe it was an hour past 7, I told myself I’m wasting time.  The target I gave myself was under 3 hours to complete 13.1 miles although when my friend signed up, I told her to put me for 3+ hours.  But as I was running, I wanted to go below that.  So I was running and all the memories of my running years came back….felt good to run again.  I don’t feel any pain, yet!

The last time I stopped to look for my friend was at this bridge (Stone Arch Bridge) and that’s the mighty Mississippi River. I snapped a picture of it with my phone as it reminds me of Niagara Falls as the mist from it was hitting us runners and the rainbow, too!  I stayed on the curb for another minute watching for her but no where to be seen, so I went on.  I have to say I was running out of juice then.  Wanted water really bad.

After crossing that bridge, further up there were water/Gatorade stations.  It was right at the bottom of the famous landmark, Gold Medal Flour (this landmark has been there forever, and I took the pic after the race while waiting for my friend).

I gulped down a few of them water and Gatorate and it did recharge the battery!  All the way till I saw mile 8 that’s when I really slowed down a lot with lots of walking and meditating.  The worse was I saw the first batch of runners who were at the front and fast pacers were on the opposite of me, that means they did the turn and running towards the finish line!!!  All I wanted was the turn around and running/walking toward the turn around was like F O R E V E R!!!  Serious, I was low on mojo and having no breakfast that morning didn’t help either.  I was running on empty.

Finally the turn around came and I have another 4 miles to go.  Knowing it’s only 4 miles I thought it would be no problem, however my legs and feet were already telling me it’s beyond run-able! :(   Again, I walked a lot but each time I see this older lady, about 60 some years old run passed me, I told myself if she can keep running so can I.  Yeah I’m a real sucker for challenges.  It’s all mind over matter.  The volunteers, cheerers definitely helped.  The last 1.5 miles was the hardest.  I was feeling extremely hot, the sun was already baking at that time. I pushed so hard to get up the hill – walked and when the cheerers said “You are right there, 3019 (that’s my bib number).  You have mile an a half up the hill!” I sped up but slowed down as it was going up hill which turned to a slow walk.  Another volunteer mentioned “half a mile to finish line” I started running and then I saw the finish line.  That’s when I really sped up and crossed the finish line, hearing the beep sounded for my finishing time was just music to my ears.  All the aches, sores, panting were all worth it.  And the best part was I made it under 3 hours: 2 hours 41 minutes was my time.  It was sweet.  Now I know how runners feel after a long hard run. Oh after crossing the finishing line, the Minneapolis Marathon volunteers will hand out a Finisher medal for all runners and picture taken, too.

Now the part that scared me. After I crossed the finished line I was actually shaking and feeling cold. It sure felt funny to just stop, it’s as if I cannot stop, I have to keep running. I walked away from the sun to the water stations, my hands were shaking. Sucked down a few cups and was still hot and cold at the same time. When I went to hold on the metal fence along the road to stretch out, I felt dizzy. I thought I was going to collapsed of a heart attack or something. Wanted to sit but just couldn’t coz I was really shaking and my legs were darn sore. My mind tells me I have some heat stroke and dehydration. I then went over to a medical volunteer asking her is it normal to feel that way. She say yes since I sweated so much and low on electrolytes. Also running burns off the carbs. She told me to grab a post run munchies and eat a banana to fuel up and stand in the sun for a while.

Post run brown bag munchies are given out right after crossing the line, that consisted of Fit Kids Organic Snacking Grahams, Old Dutch potato chips, banana, apple, Salted Roll Nut bars and Fit Kids Organic Oat Meal. I didn’t take pictures, I was so hungry I had to grab another banana. Call me greedy, I didn’t care then.

While I waited for my friend, I took some pictures which are the ones you see above and eating at the same time. Also did a bunch of stretches. I even had my picture taken by the pro which of course will cost money if I want to buy it. It’s not out on the website yet.

So, running a half marathon is checked off on my bucket list.

My friend showed up about 30+ minutes later.  After both of us cooled of, we walked acrossed the street to the Guthrie Theater to the Endless Bridge.  I have never been there, so my friend was my tour guide!

Picture taken from the Guthrie Theather. We walked up there to see the view of the area.  The kiddie pools at the bottom right of the picture are for runners to cool down.  Also, there are hoses available for whoever wants to hose themselves down.

Another look of the Minnesota Niagara Falls and the Stone Arch Bridge taken from the Endless Bridge.  I can say I ran on that bridge across the Mississippi! :)

And finally a pic of me after the race.  Yeah all smiles then!!  However, not now! :(

After all these pic taking, we walked back to The Depot, collected our stuff and headed to our car for a big makan!

Holy Thursday event practice

Comments Off

I signed up for an event for Holy Thursday which is next week, April 21.  I volunteered for the foot washing ritual.   Yesterday was the practice.  As far as I know Catholics perform this ritual of washing his disciples’ feet on Holy Thursday, the Lord’s last supper before He was betrayed and arrested.  It is mentioned in the Gospel of John, Chapter 13, if interested read it up here.  This ritual is an act of humility and humbleness.

So last night the practice was easy peasy.   Not all participants showed up.  The church will set up 12 stations and each station will have 4 people to it.  I am with 3 other girls but only 2 of them showed up.  Amongst the 4 of us, we need to decide who will wash and dry first and then switch.  Know what I’m saying?  We decided that the 2 girls will wash and dry, me and the other girl who didn’t show up will have our feet wash first.  When our feet are washed and dry, we will get up, the other two girls will take their seats and me and the no-show girl will wash their feet.

I am looking forward to this ritual and the entire Triduum.  It’s been a year since my baptism and witnessing the newly baptize this year will be more meaningful.

Juice detox – failed!!

Comments Off

I wanted to try juice detox for the longest time.  I actually bought slimming tea but that’s just to get me regular since I’m not regular all the time and hoping to get some toxins out at the same time.  But to really cleanse myself out like what I did for my colonoscopy, I need to purge the whole day.

My friend S recommended me the lemonade detox from mastercleanse.org.  I bought lemons and started on in on Sunday.  Mind you I have already had in mind to do another detox of prune and apple juice and water from this site.  I actually bought the prune and apple juice couple weeks ago but didn’t get it going.  So Sunday I did the lemonade detox the whole day.   Honestly I didn’t follow it to the T.  I skipped the maple syrup and cayenne pepper.  The lemonade water itself was hard to swallow….it was too lemony for me, but I chugged it down the entire day till dinner, I was hungry.  DB said it could be I was out walking for an hour with the dogs.  Yep, dinner time I had dinner but it was not too heavy.

On Monday, I had the day off, I did the lemonade and the other detox: prune and apple/water.  The prune juice makes you go within 15 minutes after drinking it.  You start of drinking the prune juice, then apple juice with water every 30 minutes.  Honestly, this was easier to handle than the lemonade thingy.  However, I had a major headache come afternoon and I was dead tired.  I was napping from 12:30 – 2:30 p.m. and was still tired.  Then I went for a walk and that was the end of my detox.  This detox is for 3 days.  I didn’t even complete day 1!

I totally failed on both detox!!!  It’s all mind over matter, but yet I can’t do it.

My 2010 Christmas present

Comments Off

I left really early on December 23rd, 2010.  There was only me and another admin (M) in the office that day.  See how hardworking these admins are! :)   M said she wants to leave at 11:30 to get her groceries done which also to avoid the human traffic on 24th.  She said i should leave around that time, too, since there were only we 2 souls, practically did nothing except surfed and chatted.

I left 15 minutes after she did and headed to Sam’s Club to get my weekly groceries.  I saw a pair of boots priced decently – suits my budget most importantly.

DSC03247

I told myself UGG’s are 100x expensive for me, plus it’s so darn hard on my feet since I have screwed up feet now. I vouched not to get UGG’s or any other similar design. Well, I’m eating my own words now.

I tried the above pair on, it was very soft but the base (is that what you call it?) is still very hard on my feet. So I inserted my orthotics in, well, lo and behold, the pair of boots is now so super soft and comfy. Walked around a little, yet was still debating if I should or not. In the end I told myself, “Get it, it’s your Christmas present.” Hahahahaha, too easy, isn’t it???

This 100% Australian sheepskin boots, buatan Cina cost me $38.95.  There was a lady who was trying on the black pair said she is getting a pair for her niece because she herself has a pair and is very comfortable and worth the price.

Went home had to parade around a little to see which wearing style is better.

…OR this.

I prefer wearing it the other way, the first one. It suits me better since I’m a shorty.

If worse comes to worse, will stick to the old fashion way:

Merry Christmas to myself! :D

The open ceremony was that night when I took the boys out for their potty run before bed. I have to say walking on flat ground with snow is alright. By the way, it was snowing pretty good that night, too. Unfortunately I was sliding on my ass when Ranger had to go up the little wooded area to do his business. His leash got tangled up around those bald shrubs. I had to climb up the snow bank, got him loose, shooed him down to ground level. I followed behind and the grip on the soles were not enough, or I could have stepped on an uneven bump, I went for a slide ride. Oh well, at least it was quite soft of a landing but left me with a cold butt.

Thereafter, I was wearing the boots each time I went out with my errands and church. Good buy I might say! :)
