What an experience
Monday, January 1st, 2007I said goodbye to DB this afternoon, hopped into the car and headed out to County Road 11 towards 140th Street. The roads were not too bad – wet and some spots were dry. So I did the speed limit which is 45 mph and some areas I did 50. When I got down towards Garden View Road intersection, I saw ice and melting snow on top of it, I slowed down, stepped on the brakes and guess what?? I spun out. I knew at the back of my mind that if I keep hitting the brakes I will spin out. Sure shit, I did. The backend of my car spun from the side of my intersection to the oncoming traffic. As soon as the car spun, I let go the gas and brakes and let it spin and tried to turn the steering wheel a little until I felt it was slowing down but then I saw I was going to hit the traffic light post..The name JC came right out and that’s when I turn the steering the opposite of where the car is heading to. Eventually the frontend of the car was facing the side of the street where I was suppose to be with the backend sitting nicely on the street. I did not hit anyone, no street pillars, electric post, traffic light post or the sidewalks. I am so glad there was only one car from the oncoming traffic. The driver stopped his SUV some distance away from me.
The first thing I did when my car stopped was looked around me if anyone had a fender-bender because of me – you know, jammed on the brakes and skid and BANG somebody’s backside. Well, all seems find. I am still surprised at myself I did not freak out, heart pumping 200mph, which I thought I would be. Instead, I say “Holy shit! Thank God! Phew!!” So, put the car on P, shut the car off and started it back. It fired up! Put it on D and off I went to Sams Club hitting 45 mph.
I know there is some usefulness watching NASCAR races. Watching how these drivers manuever the wheel when they spin out is fun. I did not expect I will have to experience this. Of all my years of driving in the winter, this was my first spin out and hopefully it will be the last.
