When I was still in school, whether it’s primary or secondary, I will bring home a donation sheet from the school. My parents told me charity begins at home. That’s right. My parents would put down a few bucks and then my aunt, and sometimes my mom would asked her girlfriends to donate to my school.
I have been giving to charity ever since I came to the United States: March of Dimes, St. Jude’s Children Hospital and our local children hospitals and schools. When my company started the Employee Giving Campaign 4 years ago, I continued to give and has broaden my list since which included our local humane society. There is an option on the form if I want the organizations I am donating my money to know who I am. I have always check NO on the form, but guess what??
These were received on Friday and Saturday. Two days and there were about a dozen asking for money. I threw some away from Monday and Tuesday’s mail. There were more last week. I only keep a few on those I have an interest in. The rest were sent to me by some organization selling my address to other organizations.
It is good for us to donate to charity for tax deductions, but I like to choose which organization I like to contribute to, not any Tom, Dick or Harry charity. I even received mailings from the Jehovah Witness org and so many more that I didn’t bother to open them. They can waste their money printing them letters, forms and flyers, I am still the winner.
