Running vs walking

Friday, October 19th, 2007

I busted my knees almost 2 years ago.  From all the years of running, finally my knees are telling me they have enough of the torture I’m putting them through.  It hurts to run downhill or walk down the steps.  I don’t even know how to describe the pain.  At times I have to limp when I walk.  Sometimes walking on flat ground or bending my knees, I get this sharp pain on both knees or it could be on one or the other knee.

Now that I’m just walking and not pounding the sidewalks and streets, my knees are doing better.  I really missed running though.  It feels very good when I’m running.  It’s the “rush” I like that is the more I run, the more I want to do it.  It’s addictive.  I do all my thinking when I’m running.  When I run I know I burn a lot more energy and I’m constantly hungry.  I eat a lot when I run and not gain a pound because I run 2 times a day.  I over did it, but back then, I had my reasons.

Everyone told me to walk instead of run.  Walking does not have that kick I am looking for.   It’s actually really boring.  Although I walk with the boys, it adds some fun to it, but the “rush” is not there.  If possible I will speed walk.  I will try to speed walk 3 miles in 30 minutes.  That is not easy with 2 busybody dogs who have to stop and snoop every 10 yards or less.

Now that the cooler weather is here, I have been walking the trails again.  On some parts of the trails I will run up the gradient or down.  It feels good because I could feel my legs, hips and butt are working out.  The stretch and my heart beating 200 mph is a great feeling.

Walking is good but it seems like I need to walk 3 extra miles to burn the extra pound.  With all these walking I have been doing, my feet have a funny twitch to them now.  The best is have an amputation from the knees down! :)  Just kidding, but that’s really how it feels.  The twitch/pull is on the top of feet where the bones are and at times on the sides of my feet.

This weekend I will have to pay a visit to DSW for a new pair of tennis.  Hopefully with a different pair of shoes the pain in my feet will go away.

Credit cards

Friday, October 19th, 2007

After the episode of our bankruptcy few years ago, we never thought we will be able to apply for credit cards.   Both our credit scores were so bad, it was practically down to the 200s.  We received a lot of credit card applications promoting the 0% APR balance transfers.  We went to a seminar for folks like us 3 months after.  The program encouraged bankruptors to apply for secured credit cards to rebuild our credit history.  Not all banks offer secured credit cards, though.  Another type of application we need to avoid are those credit cards with cash back progams.  This is a reward program that offers cash back or rebate incentives and it usually requires a good credit standing for approval.

Charles Schultz Philosophy

Charles Schultz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you’ll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winner for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Acheivements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
 Easier?

The lesson:  The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

Insurance

Friday, October 19th, 2007

SD and BF bought a Saturn Ion recently with the understanding that SD’s mom will pay for the car insurance.  Her mom made a deal with her: it’s either mom for the car insurance, and the money from SD’s bonds will be cashed out for the new car downpayment, or mom pay for downpayment and SD will take care of the insurance.  SD chose the first option.  Of course being the Becca Biatch she is, she said she changed her mind don’t feel like paying for her insurance anymore.  Very lovely of the mom.

Anyway, DB and I were able to bundle our home insurance, and SD’s insurance into one package with our insurance agent.  This agent totally did a wonderful job, and even asked if we need travel insurance for our trip.  This is call great customer service.

TGIFF Random crap

Friday, October 19th, 2007

Yeehah, it’s Friday, a rainy, cool morning to wake up to.  Had to come in to work to complete the reports.  Wanted to call it in this morning, but just couldn’t do it.  Something about me, I cannot call in and say I’m taking a sick day when I’m not sick.  In my books, it is not justifiable.  DB can do it in a heartbeat, but not me.  No matter how much I don’t want to be there, I still can’t do it.

Received great news from SD yesterday morning.  She’s pregnant and 7 weeks along.  Had her first doctor’s appointment yesterday and all went well.  The due date is around May 29.   The grandparents-to-be are super duper happy for them.  We know how much they wanted a baby.

Our plans to visit Texas on May 27, 2008 will most probably be cancelled.  Justin’s graduation is May 27 and the party is May 30. We will all be missing it but we rather stay up here and wait for the new arrival!  Db said it’s no contest which comes first.  Amen to that.

We will be going for a surprise birthday party tonight.  It’s my friend’s birthday, the one who said I have a big butt!  Well, since she  told me that, I totally cut my snacking down and stuck to my 3 meals a day.  Main meal is still dinner and so far it’s working great.  Jeans, pants, shirts are not tight anymore.  Hope to keep that up for good.  Fingers crossed.

Placed a bunch of orders in from Amazon.com, my favorite place to shop, and I can’t wait for them to arrive.  Majority of them are gifts to bring along for my trip.  Also, I bought our tickets for SIN/KUL/SIN last evening.  All set for tickets and the shopping continues.

*28 more days counting down*
