Car caught on fire

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Yesterday morning at work I overheard a manager telling her subordinates a car was on fire over at the back of the parking lot.   She was walking to the skyway and saw it all.  As she was getting into the other building, the gas tank blew up.  There was one car next to the car on fire.  Good thing there was only one car next to the burning one, if not….. I can’t imagine the disaster!!

After 10 minutes of what I heard, the entire office were talking about this incident.  One of the managers’ husband works closer to the side of where the incident happened, he called her wife which she went right right to the skywalk to see what was going on.  I didn’t bother but so happened my coworker needed me to run downstairs to the copy center to drop stuff off, I was able to see the burnt up car with the fire trucks and men still out there.  The car next to it was still in one piece.

Speaking of car starting on fire on its own, my BIL’s car started on fire, too, last month, actually exactly a month ago.  The below pictures shows how bad it was.  What survived was the wife’s lawn mower.  The rest of the garage was useless.  He runs a detailing business in his garage and all the stuff were toast.  They have to tear the garage down and build a new one.  Man, that really stinks.

The garage got it, too.

BIL said he came home from work, parked his car where he usually did, went in, changed, got something to drink, sat down and he heard someone shouting “fire”.  He didn’t think much about it til he heard much more commotion outside.  He went out and saw his car and garage on fire.   The engine started a fire and was so high, it got the garage also.  Dang, that is scary.

My recruiting days

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

All the years I have been with my company, the best part of my job was being the system administrator for the company’s recruiting system.  I still wish I am part of the recruiting team, however, because of my department which does nothing but all compliance and legal stuff, recruiting is out of the picture when the company outsourced recruiting to a vendor.  My boss had to take my system administrator cum recruiting responsibilities away.

Being in the recruiting team was fun for me.  I had the opportunity to meet other hiring managers where I can now put a face to their names.  I hear so much about them, but can’t picture what they look like.  When you are in the recruiting team, I have to deal with the background checks, too, which is also done by another vendor.  The company conducts these checks for all candidates who are offered a position with the company.  These include the last 7 years of education, employment, criminal checks, and depends on the position, driving records and credit will also be checked.

Sentrylink.com is a site where one can conduct a check on anyone.  Like any other background check sites, if the employer intends to conduct criminal background checks, the employer needs to inform the applicant/candidate via a form that the company will be doing such pre-employment checks through a form to release their information/records to the employer.

Having the background checks done on candidates will assist the employer if the candidates have given any false information on their application forms.  I have seen background checks come back with flags on them for criminal/driving records that were not specified by the candidates who were offered the position, or falsifying their education or prior employment.

Golfing season

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Spring is here, I think, because of the wacky weather, and the golf courses are now in full action.  Our neighbor are looking for a golf partner to golf with him.  DB said he would if only his feet does not hurt him so much.  The neighbor guy said he just bought brand new golf balls last week because the ones he had were gone missing or just too old.  We told our neighbor guy to get the other neighbor who lives across us for a few golf sessions since that guy is an avid golfer.
