Chase, Chase

Yep, Chase is here with us.  He is getting used to us now.  He chilling right now, laying by the dining table with the other boys.

We got him here til the baby is born, I think.   A pup is a pup, full of energy.  Dang, wish I have that kind of energy.   He is a sweet looking, pup, though, but I had to stop him from jumping on the couch or even tries to.   Hahaha, I’m giving him some obedience, that fella was jumping all over me on the couch yesterday.  Then this fella looks like he is going to be a dominant one, but I don’t know about that yet from what I observed but DB said that first.  Will see.  I know he is jealous when I pat the two other boys, Chase will be whining up a storm, barged in between the boys and scoot his way to be right in front of me.  It’s funny but I’m trying not to let him to do that so much.  The next funny thing is when it comes to feeding time, he whines a lot.  Oh.My.God.  I have never heard so much whining.  Again, it was funny.  Made us laugh.  I have to knee him a lot from not jumping on me.  But what seems to work is I’m making him work for his food and his demands.  He needs to sit before he gets his meals; sit or laydown before he gets his treats, and sit before he comes in the door which all seems to calm him down a little.  I didn’t want to do the obedience but I had to do it.  He almost knocked me down a few times, little guy like him has so much strength.   Did a lot of repetition on “down” today, hopefully he will get it by tomorrow.  Tomorrow is another day with this fella.  It’s hard to get angry with him with that puppy eyes.

My next puppy

Comments Off

DB and I did give the thought of getting another puppy, but I shoved it off.  The two big boyz are more than enough for me to walk, bathe and split my attention-giving for them.  DB insisted that we should at least get a puppy within the smaller breed category, but I was persistent, No means NO.

Having another puppy right now is not the right time for us.  If I want another puppy I would check out other dog breeds besides Labrador Retrievers.  Labs are great dogs, but they are high maintenance dogs.  I love all kinds of breeds and especially the one our friend, Dorothy has, a miniature Dachshund name Greta.  Greta is such a loving dog, so affectionate and very playful.  Probably she was still a little pup then when we last saw her.  (Dorothy and family have moved to South Dakota.)  Greta has long hair and she is black with tinge of brown patch on her paws and belly.

I remember my cousin has a Dachshund dog, too, named Sparkle, a brown colored pure bred with smooth short hair.  I remember dogsitting Sparkle for a day or two.  He was the most well behaved dog I have ever encountered.  He obeys all voice and hand commands so well.  Bathing and drying him was so easy, and it could be because he was an older dog, he was around 8 years old then, he stood still for me to wash and dry him, no fuss at all.  All I can say now is Sparkle was a very loved dog.  At his age, he was still very playful – loves to play fetch and enjoyed all his walks.  My cousin maintained his weight so he wouldn’t be overweight.  Dachshunds should not be overweight.  When trained from a pup, Dachshunds will enjoy their exercising time.  My cousin tossed a tennis ball and Sparkle would run for it for hours.  That was one of the ways he stayed so slim and maintained the muscles  that made him looked so fit and trim.

My cousin told me training him was very easy, too.  Dachshunds and with any other puppy, when train from young they will be happy and so will the owners.  Sparkle was trained to stay at a position, either sit or down, when he was only 8 weeks old.   Dachshund puppies are very smart.   When training a dachshund puppy, Dorothy told me she used quite a bit of food to motivate Greta, but once she got it, she can make to without the food and she did very well too.

Caring for the Dachshund puppy is the same as caring for all other puppies.  Patience and consistency are the keys to successful training them.  Initially they will at a lost when they set paws in your home, but once they get their surroundings checked, they will start looking towards you for everything from food, play/walk, bathroom, and attention.  Do not misjudge their short legs.  These Dachshunds can run with those short legs of theirs.  I remembered chasing Greta in the backyard, and that backyard was a huge .5 acres, she was able to run the entire yard, zig-zagging all over the place.  Dachshunds are hound breeds, they are bred for hunting.  They know how to dig holes, a burrow in your yard if you are not careful of execising them enough.  They can be very noisy when bored.  That was why Greta was able to run me down, a human who is so much bigger, taller than her, to run her energy off!

Is he stoned?

DB said Ranger looked stoned in this picture.  To me, it looks more like “Picture again?”  I took this picture two weekends ago.

Ranger is getting old, he will be eight in April.  He turning gray around his snout and eyes.  We found two lumps on the side of his thigh.  The vet checked them and even drew blood from the lumps for some tests.  The results came back negative.  They are actually fat.  Both vets told DB and I those fatty lumps are very common with Labs.   The only thing we have to worry is when those two lumps are affecting his movements or pain.

My boss’ daughther had to put their yellow Lab down on Sunday for the reason I mentioned above.  Her dog, Rusty, could not get up, walk, eat, or even go for his business.  He was 12 years old.   Rest in peace, Rusty, hope there are plenty of other doggies in doggy heaven.

It was as easy as 1-2-3-4

Nice day today, blue skies in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon, but don’t be deceived by the beautiful sight out there.  It was -14F when I left the office building this afternoon at 2:30 p.m.

With the weather so damn cold today, guess what happened???

01302008_1.jpg

Yeppers, my car wouldn’t start no matter how much I tried for 15 minutes in the car without heat.  And I knew I shouldn’t have done it, I did it.  I stepped on the gas while turning the ignition on.  Did it so many times, I almost killed the battery and then I flooded the whatever pump with gas.  All this happened while at company’s property.  I had to walk to the lobby of the main building and told the security guys I needed help to jump start my car.  I waited for about 15 minutes, Mark’s Towing appeared, I got in their truck and went right to where my car was.  That guy jump started it within minutes, came back to the truck and told me all is well but he did ask me what it was doing before I called SOS.  I just told him when I tried to fire her up, it only turned and it wouldn’t fire up even when I stepped on the gas.  He said I shouldn’t step on the gas with this type of car with injection-fuel cars.  So, my car really smelt of gas big time when I got in.  I had to sit in the car for another 10 minutes to burn the gas off before I finally left the parking lot.

When I got home, this is what I saw in our kitchen.

Our kitchen window frosted from being so cold.  Yeah, we have very old windows that need to be replaced but that will have to wait.  The above picture reminds me of some suspense movie.

I didn’t walk the boys either; sent them out on the backyard and they both had some sort of play time with the neighbor’s visiting dogs.

I know you will be wondering what those brown/black thingys out on the snow.  They are the poop we have not gotten to them.  Yes, the backyard is becoming a cow pad.  These two boys formed two paths that they will always use to do their business or just to walk from the patio to the very end of the yard.  It’s nice to have winter loving dogs.  They can be out there for quite some time unless the wind is howling like yesterday, than I would force them to come in.  And during winter, they are a little fatter!!!  DB always feeds them a little more since they need the  fat to stay warm which is making the boys so darn happy and I have to walk them more when it gets warmer!

Anyway, that’s my day of fun for today.  And I still has this song spinning in my head since this morning.
